Flood Management Schemes: Dams

Dams

Description:

Dams are engineered structures built across a river that regulate and control river flow. They are used to regulate floods and store water for supply.

Advantages:
  • Regulates flow
  • Stores water supplies
  • Allows irrigation
  • Generates electricity
  • Prevents flooding
  • Allows for recreation
Disadvantages:
  • High costs - Floods land upstream, and may displace population and habitats
  • Causes problems downstream - Less sediment and water flow, clearwater erosion, causes environmental change
