Flood Management Schemes: Channelisation

Channelisation:

Description:

Rivers can be widened and deepened to increase discharge capacity. This changes the river's hydraulic radius and makes it more efficient.

Advantages:
  • Increases river velocity
  • Efficient
  • Reduces friction
  • Reduces sediment storage
  • Halts migration and erosion
  • Protects upstream from flooding
Disadvantages:
  • Increases river velocity and erosion downstream
  • Habitat damage
  • May not decrease overall flood risk/damage
  • Interrupts riffle and pool sequence
